We had a delicious dinner at Nurlan Uyghur Restaurant tonight! The portions were very generous and the staff was friendly. We ordered the big plate of chicken, the laghman and samsa as well as the lamb skewers. We also had a soup with little dumplings that was pure comfort food. All of it was so flavorful and the noodles had a great springy texture that made for an excellent mouthfeel.

This is one of the closest restaurants from the NewYork Presbyterian Hospital. For staff and visitors of the hospital, this is god-sent. Where can one find Uyghur cuisine in the US? Yet, from the hospital, Nurlan is a mere 5 minute walk. I walked here from the hospital and ordered 2 Lamb Kawabs (kababs, $3 ea) and 2 Samsas (like samosas, $3 ea) to go. The young man had no problem taking my order, yet he couldn't answer my questions. I tried both English and Mandarin to no avail. He ended up running to the kitchen and get the owner/chef out. Especially given the very ethnic decors, the whole experience really felt like I was out in the Northwest China! Actually I think all of the clientele look Eurasian. A very special experience for me. As for the food, the kababs, since it's to go, looked a bit pathetic due to the lack of fanfare of metal skewers. The taste was good. The samsas were OK. They didn't taste as satisfying as the Indian samosas that I'm more used to. I would definitely come back if I visit the hospital again. I realize I still need to try the Laghman!
